May 20 Irish Junior Maths Champion 2014
David Troy from Castleknock College was the joint winner (with Celine Schmidt from Loreto, Balbriggan) of the Irish Junior Maths Contest (Leinster section).
Over 10,000 First Year students from all over the country take part in this competition every year. It is run by the Cork branch of the Irish Maths Teachers Association to encourage young people to develop their maths and problem-solving skills.
The first round is held country wide in February and the top scorers take part in the Final in May.
This year ten students from Castleknock College qualified for the final Jonathon O’Donnell, Billy Cremin, Ruairà Connolly, Vladamir Dainovski, David Troy, Ciaran O’Flynn, Dara O Boyle, Nathan Mulvaney & Luke McDonough.
That is the greatest number of finalist in any school in Leinster.
Competitions such as these are brilliant in encouraging young people to get fun out of mathematics and to develop the kind of skills that will help them after they leave school.
These are the skills that Google and Intel are telling us we should be developing.
