Good luck to the Senior Team as they play St Mary’s on Tuesday Jan 31st (k.o. 2.30 pm) at Donnybrook. Entry into the match is: Students: € 3 entry and € 2 into the stand, for adults: € 10 entry and € 5 into the stand. The cost for the bus is €2. We would like to see every student there as our ‘16th Man’. It is a long tradition going back over 100 years that the entire school attends these matches. It is part of what we are.

This year’s Annual Business Lunch will be held in the Berkeley Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 on Friday 9th March, eve of the Ireland v Scotland rugby international.

The Union welcomes parents and friends of the College to our Business Lunch, the biggest event on our social calendar.  It is the ideal occasion to entertain friends and business associates in a lively and relaxed atmosphere.

Congratulations to...

...Castleknock College won the History Teachers’ Association of Ireland Quiz, beating 40 other schools. The winning team was:  Robert Farrell, Fintan Doherty, Niall Williams & Kevin Bassett. Congratulations to all involved including Mr McGauley and the History Department.

...and to to Keelan Daly who won the DCU Business School Annual Junior cert Business Studies Award. Keelan was presented  with his prize at DCU on Thursday night during an awards ceremony held by the University.

...and to all who took part in this years ACM8 maths contest. Cathal Bermingham scored 16 which is the highest ever score by a Castleknock student (putting him in the top 5% of the 250,000 students who took part worldwide. Cathal was closely followed by Conor Stinson, Seán Pardy and Matthew Tallon who all scored 15.

...and to Bernard O’Connor and Eoin O’Gorman who received prizes at a computer programming course for TY students at DCU.

...and to the boys U 13 Table Tennis Team who travelled to Scoil Bhríde to play them in the quarter final. The boys were victorious in this nail-biter of a match and are now through to the semi-final. Congratulations and best of luck.

...and to the Spanish debaters who have progressed into the semi-final. The team is made up of: Eoin Graham, Rory Gleeson, Darragh McGabhann, Conor McMeel and Sub- Alex Dunne. We wish them the best of luck.

... and to the Science debaters: Adam Boyle, Stephen Quinnlan, Dylan Stuart and Shadi El Marsi who beat Loreto of Dundalk in Trinity recently.

Junior debating continues each week in room 1-21 on Thursdays at 1.15pm. Next week the motion before the house is “That this house believes that Irish should remain a compulsory subject in schools”. All welcome.

David Baigel, Vice Captain of the College, was one of only 20 students from the island of Ireland to be awarded a medal and further prizes as part of the Pramerica Spirit in the Community Awards. The final is taking place in Derry on the 28 March 2012, at which David will receive €500 and a medal. Congratulations to him on this well-deserved win. He wrote about his experiences in Ambo, Ethiopia, to achieve the award. Thanks also to James O’Loughlin who helped David with his application.

Castleknock College Barbershop was delighted to perform at St Vincent’s Centre, Navan Road and St Joseph’s Centre, Clonsilla on December 22nd.  The Junior Concert Band will have its first rehearsal on Thursday 20th of January at 8am in room 1-27. The ensemble will focus on a mixture of popular music, with a focus on recent chart hits. All students who have woodwind and brass lessons are warmly invited to attend

                              

Congratulations to Seán O’Héir, Colm Peelo and Ross Ward who had projects entered in this year’s BT Young Scientist Competition. and did themselves and the school proud.   Last years winner Alexander Amini was on RTE's Nationwide programme, now available on i-player.

Congratulations to Kealan Daly who will be awarded a DCU Business School Annual Junior Certificate Business Studies Award. Keelan will be presented with his award on Wednesday the 25th of January.

Setanta TV have asked the public to vote on which SCT game they should televise. Junior Debating takes place at lunchtime every Thursday at 1.15 in Room 121. The first debate next week will be on the motion: That this house believes that Castleknock College should be co-educational.

Congratulations to Eoghan Quinn on being part of the Castleknock Gaelic Team who won the Division 1 Dublin title.

Good luck to Fintan Doherty and Daniel Byrne who will take part in the Inter County Cross country Championships in Sligo  on Sunday.

Congratulations to Liam Byrne (our tennis coach) who won the Irish Universities Tennis Championship.

6th Year Parents: Reminder of upcoming events, Thursday 17th parents teacher meeting, Tuesday 22nd CAO information night for both students and parents & 8pm.

Comenius: A number of students have been chosen to take part in our Maths Comenius Project which will involve using ‘Mathematica’ (a new software Maths program) to teach and learn maths. They will try out the new methods and will travel to different European schools to compare notes. This project is supported by the EU.

The new Astro-turf is opened each day at lunch time. We want this excellent facility to last – so only trainers are allowed. We are enforcing this strictly, as our 10-year guarantee depends on it.

Table tennis, tennis, cross-country and cricket continue every Tuesday after school. There have
been great numbers taking part. Keep it up.
Basketball after school on Thursdays and Fridays.
Gymnastics take place after school in the gym on Fridays. The numbers are increasing weekly.

Library Books: New books are displayed regularly in the Library. Mr Power and Ms Hague would like to
encourage boys to visit often and avail of the borrowing facility.

Alex Amini, of 5th year, has won the 2011 European Young Scientist of the Year award in Helsinki, Sept 27th.  His project was a development of the BT Young Scientist award from last year on Tennis Sensor Data Analysis. Read more here

The Barber Shop Club meets on Fridays at lunchtime. They have got off to a great start.

The Soul Band will have its first meeting on Monday 26 th. Don’t forget your instruments.

The Castleknock College Vincent de Paul Society meets every Thursday at 1.25 pm. All
welcome.

Golf lessons available for 1 st and 2 nd year students contact Mr. Gallagher. The golf outing
to Hermitage Golf Club takes place on Friday 30 th .
Newspapers are available for collection from the Library every morning.
